Fantasy
A random observance on fantasy settings: It's common to see both elves, and dark elves in a setting - the latter, more often than not, being evil and having darker skin. And, whilst not as common, across various games I've seen 'dark' variants of most races, dark dwarves and the like - similarly, they have darker skin and are inherently born evil.

And it occurs to me, I've never seen any of these games offer you a chance to play as a Dark Human - some let you play a human with darker skin, but in none of them does this make the character automatically evil, or, for example restrict them to theif and similar classes.

And, well, you could imagine the uproar if they did - that'd be racism, right? So is racism alright as long as it's only elves?

...I think weird things late at night...

For the record, I adore dark elves. ^^

The problem of racial morality for fantasy species was noted even in Tolkien's day - some found it abhorrent because it effectively made the main characters racist. I believe TV Tropes has more on this.

However, there always needs to be a good side and a bad side in games, and the easiest way to do it is to have a monolithic culture of evil, even if that doesn't fly in the real world.

Interestingly, there seems to be a kind of 'dark human' in Dungeons and Dragons (in the new Monster Manual, anyway), which worship some kind of raven queen... but they're more pale than white humans :3

Heh, I've got plenty complaints about the idea of inherently evil races existing in the first place, but I was more puzzled how if you just give characters pointy ears, it's suddenly alright to do things which would otherwise attact mass outcry and condemnation.

But it is interesting to find out D&D have actually done this - I'm not up on all the 4ed stuff (until Player's Handbook 2 I want nothing to do with it), but I'll have to look this up...

OK, looking at this it seems D&D have basically made 'goth' a type of monster.

This is why Star Trek wins. Because of Tuvok.
