The computer has been wiped and restored to factory settings. Already I'm seeing major improvements in speed and performance. This will become a yearly thing for me now that I see the difference.
There are no games, save one on the computer right now. And I plan to keep it that way for the most part. I'm not going to have many games on it anymore, less distraction. Besides, the games will work much better on the super-rig I'm getting next year.
What has been installed however, is GIMP, Open Office, Rough Draft, Blender, and Lightwave v8. It'll be a slow start due to time of year, but it's still a start. Time to start pushing forward with my projects... which reminds me, I still need a file from a certain someone (you know who you are). |

Chopped around and updated! All good fun, eh?

In unrelated news, my main laptop no longer has an H key, but since it's a triple-layer membrane keyboard, it doesn't matter so much. I'm rather glad this "Genuine Dell" keyboard wasn't genuine! It's much nicer to type on than the original one, too... |

I haven't played World of WarCraft since August, and truth be told, I really don't miss it that much. I miss the playing with my guild, but even then, they're usually not around due to the six hour time difference between here and there. At this rate, I may very well not play until Cataclysm is released, and that's another year or two at least.
The room is finally clean, sans vacuuming. Once that's done, I can start back into practicing dance and exercising. I've put on twenty pounds in the last two months, I want to drop close to thirty. Anyone know of any good aerobic/yoga DVDs they might recommend? New stuff is always welcome.
Drawing practice is slow, but starting back bit by bit. Still draw like shit though. Practice practice practice and try to ignore my perfectionist critic.
Going to disappear for a while, though I'll still be reachable via AIM... for the most part.
EDIT: Eventually, I want to get Lightwave v9 in order to work on digital-based projects. That won't happen for a while, because I don't have a grand to blow on awesome software like that yet. However, while organizing my software CDs, I found my copy of Lightwave v8, which reminded me I have a couple books on the software also. Looks like I get to start playing after all. |

One laptop, a repair job abandoned by the owner. I'm sick of the sight of it: £65
1.5GHz P4m, 512MB RAM, 12GB HDD w/XP Pro VLK installed (laptop does have a legit XP Home OEM key, but I don't have a Home install disc). Onboard SiS graphics, I believe.
The cost may seem steep for a low-spec machine, but this is to cover my time and the parts used in repairing it - the motherboard caught fire after the original owner left the dc lead connected, knowing the socket was faulty. This machine now has a very unique dc input connector.
Reply here or by IM/email if you're interested. Comes with a laptop bag and a spare battery, but I think both batteries are a bit knackered. |

EVP.
If (with no input signal) I turn the volume and treble controls on my Rogers Ravensbourne Stereo amplifier to maximum, then get up close and personal with the right speaker, I can clearly hear the words "It's a prison!" being repeatedly uttered by a worried female voice.
I really need to service this amp.

Tomorrow is the first day I'm officially covering for the IT dudes who are away on holiday, so I'll be taking calls from clients and sorting out their problems. So nervous! I am wholly unprepared for this, but I'm pretty fast on my feet when I have to be. To make it easier, I'm not alone; there's another new starter who I'm working alongside, so we can back up each other.
They're also hinting they want me to have a go at sales, which is really, really not something I want to do. I am not a salesman. I don't care for sales. I'm a geek. I sit down and do the geeky stuff that normal people can't. Why they want me to try and persuade people to buy things, I have no idea.
I'll let you know tomorrow how the disaster went. :3 |

| First two days of job |

First two days of my new job haven't been too bad!
To give more information: a friend of mine is going on holiday for two weeks starting this Friday, and I'm covering for him (along with another new starter). The job is IT support - he fixes problems with the company's network and manages the networks of the company's clients, to whom it provides various services.
Thus, I am now an IT dude. Go me! I can now say 'have you tried turning it off and on again' legitimately!
I'm not having many problems with the work at all (yet) although that's because my friend is there to show us what to do. The real test will be the next two weeks, when we're on our own and having to solve problems for clients.
My main problem, and yes you guessed it, is a certain anxiety disorder which I'm mostly keeping on top of, although it's bloody hard work.
The first day we got a quick crash course in networking, most of which I was pleased that I remembered, although some of my knowledge is hopelessly outdated - when I learned networking in university, we were taught how ethernet hubs work, and now everyone uses switches!
We were also shown how the company's network is structured, the various tools they use (mostly Remote Desktop Connections), and how to do some of the more common tasks like going into Active Directory, adding users to an Exchange server, etc. None of this is difficult, but Windows is unintuitive enough to keep IT people in business for many a year yet. Some of this stuff would take me a long time to figure out if I didn't have someone beside me who's done it before, so I'm going to learn as much as I can from him before he goes on holiday.
Of course, sometimes even a competent IT technician has to admit defeat, so another, and possibly a harder part of my job will be doing that gracefully. But I'm pretty good at talking to people, I think i'll be all right. If I'm not, hey, I've had worse problems :p
On the second day we went to a client to install some RAM in a laptop (a 2 minute job) and then to clean up her system (a 2 hour job which we didn't even fully complete in the end, thank you Windows).
One annoyance I've had is the Oyster card. Not the card itself, or even the system; that's fine, I like it. But currently, there is no Oyster touch-in point at the station where I leave home from. In other words, I cannot legally travel from my home into London, despite having purchased the means to do so! And they have specifically set up the payment system so I cannot turn the £50 pay-as-you-go credit I put on into a weekly travelcard, which would allow me to travel from anywhere. Why the heck not? It's not like I'm trying to cheat them!
One nice and weird thing about working in London, however - I'm working in St Pauls, literally a minute's walk from where the London Furmeet is held! So I know the area quite well, in fact. And I like it. It's nice to walk out of work in the evening and be greeted by a monstrous cathedral.
Tomorrow I'm taking the afternoon off to argue with the jobcentre, since I know they're not going to make this easy for me, despite that being, you know, their job. Still, I made sure to tell them I was beginning work, and to have them make a note of it. |
